From March 1, 2024, Amazon RDS users operating on MySQL 5.7 are being automatically enrolled in the Amazon RDS Extended Support and the users will incur higher charges for the same. In fact, the costs are almost double to triple, until users upgrade to MySQL 8.

AWS RDS LifeCycle

MySQL version 5.7 Community release date RDS release date RDS end of standard support date
5.7.44 25-Oct-23 2-Nov-23 29-Feb-24
5.7.43 18-Jul-23 9-Aug-23 29-Feb-24

Through Amazon RDS Extended Support, RDS plans to support the last version of MySQL 5.7, which is MySQL 5.7.44, for the next 3 years by providing security patches.

Refer Using Amazon RDS Extended Support for More Information.

The Cost:

The RDS Extended Support price depends on the MySQL version, region, and the years since standard support expired for that version. Detailed pricing can be found here: https://aws.amazon.com/rds/mysql/pricing/

For example: If you are deployed in the US East (Ohio), you will be charged $0.100 per vCPU-hr between March 1, 2024, and February 28, 2026. Starting March 1, 2026, you will be charged $0.200 per vCPU-hr.

The Amazon RDS extended support may result in more than 100% RDS cost escalation over a period of time. This is due to the inclusion of extra security features and assistance for older RDS versions.

What next? Here are the options available to you:

  • Continue to pay RDS extended support and stay legacy
  • Upgrade to MySQL 8.0
  • Modernize with MySQL Heatwave
