COVID -19 has brought digital transformation at the forefront of organizations’ growth strategies. The spread of the pandemic and the resultant lockdown has ensured that organizations come up with digital solutions to navigate the perils of remote working. Cloud computing, emerging technologies and Big Data are enabling organization to build a safe and secure work from home infrastructure.

According to the recent survey by IDC, as a result of the spread of the pandemic 64% of the organizations in India are expected to increase demand for cloud computing while 56% for cloud software to support the new normal.

The new normal has compelled organizations to shift their operating models to the cloud overnight and increased their demand for SaaS-based collaborative applications. Cloud is providing organizations with the resilient foundation of anytime, anywhere infrastructure on-demand that is critical in uncertain times such as the present.

The Cloud not only enables but also enhances remote working infrastructure in the following ways:

It provides reliable remote working tools – Cloud technology provides web-based applications, virtual desktops, endpoint encryption, conferencing software, Virtual Private Networking (VPN), and other cloud enhanced tools to make remote working seamless from anywhere in the world.

Scalability for accommodating the workload – Since most of the employees are working remotely to flatten the curve of the pandemic, there has been significant increase in the workload on the cloud. Cloud computing allows organizations to accommodate a large increase in a remote workforce very quickly. Cloud computing offers the flexibility of scaling the capacity up or down depending on the workload and thereby prevents organizations from incurring additional costs.

Enhances Collaboration – Cloud-based VDI and collaboration tools helps organizations to stay in touch with their employees, clients, and partners. Cloud-based solutions enable employees to connect and collaborate with other team members or customers in real-time to ensure seamless functioning of business operations.

Enhances Agility – Cloud computing allows organizations to procure IT resources instantly at optimum cost. This has significantly reduced the time taken to launch a product. Traditionally, businesses had to spend significant amount of time in provisioning the IT resources on which the applications would run. With cloud computing, businesses can focus on their core expertise, deploy critical applications faster, delight their customers and stay one step ahead of competition.

Improves security for remote working – Contrary to the popular belief, Cloud computing enhances the overall security of a business. Cloud undergoes regular penetration testing and is held to tougher standards of security than on-premises solutions. It offers security measures such as generating user-specific passwords and encrypting the files if they are accessed by unauthorized users. Additional security measures can be implemented in the event of mobile devices or company laptops being lost or stolen to prevent a security breach. Hence, businesses need not worry about cloud computing compromising security to enable remote working capabilities. On the contrary, it acts as an enabler.
